Tooth-Extracting Captures

The Andy Brown 'Being Brave' Series Documents Dental Procedures

The Andy Brown 'Being Brave' series documents the tooth aches of exodontia. The Sheffield-based professional photographer Andy Brown worked in collaboration with the Sheffield Children’s Hospital in order to produce these dual portraits.

Brown captures children while they are in the waiting room prior to their tooth extractions and then, after the procedure once they gain consciousness from the general anesthetics. Though the procedure is relatively quick, the difference between the two photos is clear.

The youngsters faces go from illuminated to completely woozy. Brown captures them in this moment of bravery, still posing for their portraits with barely a chance to reflect on their experiences.

This series is part of a photographic exhibition documenting the behind the scenes of the Sheffield Children's Hospital with the intention of displaying that patients are not alone in their anxieties.
