Soulful Jiving Robots

The Dancing Roboswan Brings Onlookers to Tears

The world may have been introduced to dancing robots before, but surely none of them had grace and soul like the dancing roboswan. Developed by a team at the Sweden's Mälardalen University, its performance is so beautiful that it brought onlookers close to tears.

Robotic researchers Lars Asplund and Kerstin Gauffin approached professional choreographer Åsa Unander-Scharin to create a routine for the dancing roboswan to music from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Through the layering of dance moves, Fast Company observes, "The result is as much sculpture and puppetry as dance, and allows for a more organic connection between human and machine than writing lines of code."

Emotional Robotics
