Kaleidoscopic Tennis Fashion

2009 U.S. Open Outfits Span the Color Spectrum

Style has never been more important on the courts. This year’s U.S. Open fashion was more bright and colorful than ever before.

While some have brazenly criticized the 2009 U.S. Open fashion as clown-like (The New York Times), you’ll have to decide for yourself by checking out the gallery. Ruffles seem to be a tennis court fashion theme, with Caroline Wozniacki sporting a pink Stella McCartney ruffle-skirted frock, Jelena Jankovic in a ruffled-strap red number by Chinese sportswear giant ANTA, and Serbian Ana Ivanovic’s dark purple dress with scalloped ruffles. Also worthy of note was Maria Sharapova’s silver-trimmed frock and Serena Wiliams’ bright purple number.

In my opinion, however, it could have been worse. Some outfits were surprisingly tame. Roger Federer’s red polo was typical, as was Italian player Flavia Pennetta’s simple white frock. And all that American player Bethanie Mattek-Sands did was pull her socks to her knees.
