Analysis Indicates Nefertiti Bust Was Enhanced for Beauty

Did Nefertiti benefit from a well-paid sculptor who took some liberties on her infamous bust based on his benefactor’s wishes? The bust of Nefertiti was discovered in 1912. After examining the bust with the latest imaging software, an expert thinks a makeover might have been done.

“It is possible that the bust of Nefertiti was commissioned (probably by Akhenaten himself) to represent Nefertiti according to his personal perception,” says Alexander Huppertz, director of the Imaging Science Institute in Berlin. Huppertz and his colleagues reported their finds in the journal Radiology.

Sculpture Editing
The use of modern imaging technology suggests potential for untouched sculptures and other art to have been edited, leading to modern innovation opportunities for artists and historians to explore alternative interpretations.
Perception Altering Artifacts
The possibility that Nefertiti's bust was edited to fit a personal perception of beauty highlights an opportunity for marketers and advertisers to examine how they can alter people's perception of beauty in modern times through similar methods.
Historical Accuracy Inquiry
The discovery of Nefertiti's potentially edited bust brings up the need for further inquiry into the accuracy of other historical artifacts and documents, presenting an opportunity for academics and researchers to explore the truths behind other historical figures and events.

Industries Being Reshaped

Art History
The imaging analysis of Nefertiti's bust offers an opportunity for art historians to re-examine other classical pieces to understand the potential of past touch-ups and modifications, leading to a re-evaluation of the perceived historical accuracy of various sculptures and paintings.
Advertising
The possibility that Nefertiti's bust was edited to present a certain perception of beauty highlights an opportunity for ads to alter individuals' perception of beauty through editing and other manipulation tactics.
Archaeology
The imaging analysis of Nefertiti's bust offers an opportunity for archaeologists to use advanced imaging technologies like 3D scanning to analyze and uncover long-lost artifacts in greater detail, potentially leading to new insights into our ancestors' past and innovations for analysis and curation tools.
