Twitter has made a substantial leap to become the next Google and not the next Facebook. By adding search and trends to their Twitter homepage, they are integrating a real-time search feature after tiptoeing around it for a long time. Prior to this, Twitter search was relegated to a small link at the bottom of the page to search.twitter.com.
While this technology is still technically in beta, it's a promising future addition to the user experience at Twitter.com.
