Flexible Architecture

The Sliding House Transforms its Appearance and Living Spaces

This spectacular example of flexible architecture dubbed the ‘Sliding House,’ is the dynamic work of London-based architects from drMM.

Located in a rural site in Suffolk, England, this 28 meter long dwelling features mobile walls and a roof that glides along rails to cover and uncover the static parts of the house.

The huge exterior shell moves over the greenhouse-like glass interior and open air spaces creating a variety of different living areas. Movement is powered by discreet electric motors on wheels which are integrated into the wall thickness.

The tracks can also be extended in the future, which is perfect for the owner who decides to build a swimming pool and would like the option of choosing between an indoor or outdoor pool on a daily basis.
