Keeping your keys safe with you is no longer enough. A software program was recently developed by US computer scientists at the University of California San Diego that can make copies of keys without the real thing. They can duplicate merely from photos, taken using even cell phone cameras, and from hundreds of feet away. Sophisticated digital imaging and optics available today makes it all possible.
The researchers are not revealing the source code of their program, but their work is a clear wake-up call for all of us to guard our keys like credit cards. The lead scientist, Stefan Savage, also warned people not to upload pictures which show their keys on public sites like Flickr.
