Hybrids and all electric cars offer much more than just fuel economy in an age of skyrocketing gas prices. They are quiet and help reduce noise pollution which is significant in urban areas. Yet, these cars are stealthy and unsafe because people may not hear them coming. Anyone from distracted pedestrians, small children and the blind could be at risk. A bill supported by 16 Congressmen will require a minimum sound level for hybrid and electric cars.
Two Standford University students came up with the concept of integrating fake sound systems for these near-silent vehicles. The video shows their invention. One assumes the actual sound could be changed to something not so grating to the ears.
