Weight-Based Plane Tickets

Samo Airlines Offers the World's First Pay-by-weight Flights

Samoa Air has just become the world's first airline to offer pay-by-weight flights. The tiny South Pacific airline sells tickets based on not only the weight of a passenger, but the weight of their luggage. While Samoa Airlines' new pricing plan may seem controversial and discriminatory, larger passengers and those with more luggage will be charged more, the airline insists otherwise.

Samoa Airlines operates flights using smaller planes that require accurate weight figures to ensure safety. The airline also argues that its pay-by-weight flights will help it accommodate larger passengers more comfortably. American carriers have already begun charging larger passengers extra to fly, but this is the firs time an airline has charged passengers by weight. Don't be shocked if this strategy carries over to American airline companies if it proves successful and cost-saving.
