Towering Soldier-Themed Structures

Bertel Thorvaldsen's Lion of Lurcerne Celebrates Swiss Guards

Bertel Thorvaldsen's Lion of Lucerne has been made in commemoration of Swiss soldiers. The structure stands within Switzerland's Lucerne region, the site within which the French Revolution took the lives of the referenced soldiers.

In print above the crying lion reads the sentence "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss." The debacle that is the focus of Thorvalden's work here occurred in the year 1972 when the Swiss army attacked Paris' Tuileries Palace. While they were defeated, the Lion of Lucerne has clung to their memories by celebrating those who passed valiantly. Measuring 6 meters in height and 10 meters in length, it will certainly draw in the attention of visitors and locals who are familiar with the event.
