Retention-Critiquing Art

Diane Meyer’s Multimedia Photography Art Reflects Failure of Images

The interesting idea demonstrated through Diane Meyer’s multimedia photography project is the fragility of memories and photography as a memory gadget.

Meyer used photographs from different periods of her life and pixelated parts of the scenery by physically sawing on the photos. The distortion it creates reflects “the failures of photography in preserving experience and personal history as well as the means by which photographs become nostalgic objects that obscure objective understandings of the past,” explains the artist.

The criticism behind the work is very true and yet, intriguing from a historical perspective. Not too long ago, humans did not have a way of capturing moments in the past, and photography had been a revolutionary invention, re-adjusting the idea of memory in peoples' minds. It is therefore enthralling to observe artworks such as Meyer’s echoing the era’s progression in perceptual and technological advancements.
