‘Rocking-Knit’ is a new rocking chair design from the University of Art and Design Lausanne (or ECAL for short). The chair leverages the energy generated from the natural motion of a rocking chair to automatically knit wool caps.
Created as part of an exhibition titled ‘Low-Tech Factory’, this chair is described by creators Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex as “a new interpretation of the rocking chair.” By using a series of mechanisms and gears, a person is able to effortlessly knit a wool cap just by rocking back-and-forth gently.
Ludi and Peillex are both bachelors students of the Industrial Design and Product program at ECAL. Their new design is definitely an interesting step in the right direction into a new world of multifunctional furniture.
Implications - Design students could learn a thing or two from ‘Rocking-Knit’. This multifunctional chair is able to produce wool caps from just the natural rocking motion of the chair. The common household could in theory become a manufacturer of many common household products.
