Cellphone-Generated Stargazing

The NASA Spot the Station Program Sends You Texts From Above

If you've ever wanted to see the International Space Station, the NASA Spot the Station program is for you. Being the third-brightest object in the sky (behind the sun and moon), the International Space Station is easy to spot if you know where to look, and now NASA is here to help!

NASA has long been one of the most inventive organizations in the world, but now with its ‘Spot the Station’ alert program, it’s bringing “station-gazing” right to your phone. By alerting users via SMS text or email, NASA hopes to provide its fans with information to make stargazing a little more fun. Users worldwide will receive a text message when the International Space Station is passing over their region with a “good sighting opportunity.” Defined by NASA as “sightings that are high enough in the sky (40 degrees or more) and last long enough to give you the best view of the orbiting laboratory” on its site, the space program gives the opportunity to see the International Space Station anywhere from once a month, to multiple times weekly.
