Freestanding Bamboo Art

Kizuna: West Meets East Showcases Stephen Talasnik and Tetsunoir Kawana

For the Kizuna: West Meets East exhibit at the Denver Botanic Gardens, talented artists Tetsunoir Kawana and Stephen Talasnik created intricately woven bamboo sculptures. Each artist manipulated the shape-shifting durable quality of the wood to create extravagant masterpieces to be viewed by visitors to the gardens.

The bamboo tree is sliced and shaped into towering 3D constructs that resemble the weaving on a wicker basket. Some of the creations echo the same artistry found in the Japanese art of ikebana, which is a flower arrangement technique. In some cases, the pieces are large enough for people to walk through. People can also peer at the arrangement of bamboo and wire to create a freestanding architectural marvel.

The Kizuna: West Meets East exhibition will be showcasing the expertise of these amazing artists until November 4th.
