Tension Assembled Seating

The Sam Weller Snelson Chair Holds Itself Together

Inspired by Kenneth Snelson sculptures that are held together with tension, the Sam Weller Snelson Chair recreates that concept for practical use.

These simply designed chairs are self-supporting sculptures unto themselves, with all components being held together by taught strings. The chairs have three legs that do not actually touch each other, and a flat wooden stool top made up of different types of wood including cherry, walnut and oak. The simplicity of the structure means it is simple to create and repair, and it also means, as Weller explains, that the creation of these chairs has a low environmental impact.

Demonstrating the ease and practicality of simplicity, the Sam Weller Snelson Chair is held together by string and tension alone.
