The 'GOOD' Toxic Twenty study explains which states emit the most toxic emissions into the air. It also explores how this can effect the health of those living in the United States.
According to this study, it appears that Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and West Virginia are the top five contributors of air pollution in the electric sector.
Society consumes more energy now than ever, which explains why 44 percent of electricity generation contributes to toxic air pollution. Other contributors include chemicals, paper products, food and beverages, primary metals, and transportation.
The health risks associated with air pollution -- especially those living near power plants -- include higher risks of birth defects, bronchitis, respiratory illness, heart-attacks, cancer and nervous system breakdowns. The study also states that if power plants were to reduce toxic pollution emissions, it could save up to 17,000 lives a year, and help prevent up to 120,000 cases of child asthma.
