Rebranded Rainbow Neighborhoods

The Favela Painting Project Transforms a Community

The Favela Painting Project has embarked on one of the largest public art projects Brazil in order to bring new life to its poorest neighborhoods. Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn of Hass&Hahn headed up the project which undertook the painting of an entire neighborhood from ground to sky in bright rainbow-colored art. This project is not the first of its kind in Brazil, but it is one of the largest.

Some critics say that a coat of paint is just a superficial fix to the problems of poverty; an attempt to camouflage the problem instead of solve it. However, transforming communities facing social difficulties into works of art can have a dramatic effect on residents mood and sense of well-being. The artists claim that "it is a means of imagination and rethinking, redesigning and rebranding a community at whole."

Whether the project amounts to simple beautification, or a more significant social change, the Favela Painting Project has brought some color and life to an area in need, and that is something to be proud of.
