Origami Shadow Faces

Kumi Yamashita Play With Light to Creates Amazing Facial Profiles

American Express invited artist Kumi Yamashita to create a sculpture for their office and this time she got the employees involved by crafting their facial silhouettes.

Because of the lack of space, Yamashita invited only 22 employees to be displayed. Firstly, the artist photographed the subjects and then proceeded to mold their face shapes on squared colored paper. She manipulates the paper into a shape so when one source of light is beaming on it from the side, a shadow is casted on to the wall and displays a perfect contour of a face.

Yamashita is playful with lighting but it's the most crucial part of the project. "I sculpt shadow with light or sometimes light with shadow" she says.
