The ‘Earthquake Proof Table’ was designed to keep students located on rift lines safe from falling objects when an earthquake strikes. The current procedure for students is to get under a desk when an earthquake happens, but this does no good because these desks can easily be crushed by a piece of collapsing ceiling.
Designers Arthur Brutter and Ido Bruno decided to build a table that kept students safe. Their final product was a desk that can withstand the impact of a 2,000 lb. object. The desk is also light enough for two students to carry if they need to move it around. In a classroom full of these tables, it’s possible to create rows of them so that when an earthquake strikes, there are safe passageways to escape out of.
