Portal-Torn Photography

Scott Hazard Creates Holes in the Universe

North Carolina-based artist Scott Hazard may not be able to travel through space and time, but he definitely can create photos that appear like he can. By carefully layering photographs, Hazard creates the illusion that they are a portal to another world.

Hazard starts by taking the same photo and printing multiple copies of it. He then cuts jagged holes that get smaller and smaller until it looks like one could step through and enter an alternate universe. Scott Hazard also plays with chimney smoke by turning the toxic cloud into a gateway to a different world. All of the photographs come from urban areas and makes one wonder if there are actually random portals out there waiting to be found.
