Stuttgart-based Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO has created a ceiling of LEDs that attempts to mimic the look, lighting and feeling of a cloudy sky.
The engineers at the Fraunhofer Institute have embedded ceiling tiles with over 34,000 LED lights -- creating a ceiling span of 34 square meters -- to replicate the ambiance and lighting you'd get if you were outside on a somewhat cloudy day. The engineers have even created a moving cloud effect by applying a diffuser film beneath the LEDs.
What's more, the Fraunhofer Institute engineers also studied the way light changes as the clouds outside move throughout the sky. They tried to recreate the changing color effect (which is imperceptible to the human eye) by combining red, blue, green and white LEDs together.
