It's unlikely that you've ever seen proper light fixtures quite like the Photochrome Lamps by Jean Couvreur. They are reminiscent of the playful fascination of covering bare bulbs with tinted plexi paper, but they're executed in such a polished artistic way that makes them simultaneously crisp and kooky.
The designer began by manufacturing these pendant lamps with sleek tubular forms containing fluorescent lightbulbs between burnished metal ends. The fixtures are minimal but quite elegant. For fear, however, of making the objects too bland to brighten up interior spaces, Couvreur applied sheets of colored glass to the beaming horizontal bars.
It seems that the vibrant panes were melted carefully over their corresponding tubes, as they hang limply towards the floor. Photochrome Lamps are decorated with various colors and sizes of glass, and are as unique in form and effect as the rooms that they illuminate.
