Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin Connects the 21st and 20th Centuries

Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii is a Russian chemist and history buff who became enamored with the lifestyle of pre-Revolution Russia. After viewing hundreds of black and white photos while researching the era, the chemist put on his photojournalist cap by developing a method to add color to these historic photographs.

With the help of color-filtered plates of glass, Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii was able to add life and color of the villages, railways, and rivers that serve as the backdrop for portraits of different citizens.

The images featured in this collection were taken between 1909-1912 and are currently under the control of the Library of Congress, who hold the revolutionary color photographs in high esteem. The shots are ethereal, detailed, and gripping. Do yourself a favor -- take full advantage of the technological advances made by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii.
