An airplane like this is normally a concept, but the Elektra One is actually closer to becoming a reality than you might think. The plane is currently going through the process of receiving its certifications and is expected to hit the market in 2012. $145,000 will get you both the airplane and its SunAirport Hangar, which measures 65 square feet and is covered in solar panels.
The Elektra One can fly for three hours on a single charge and has a range of 310 miles and a cruising speed of 99 mph. These figures, while not mind blowing, are pretty good when you consider the fact that most electric cars can't go for nearly half the distance that this plane can. Whether or not the Elektra One will be a success remains to be seen, but I wouldn't be shocked to see many more solar power planes debut hot on its heels. You can't power planes on petroleum forever.
