Rebellious Retrospectives

The 'No Skateboarding' Book Looks at the Unruly Skate Scene

A new book by French author Mathias Fenneteuax entitled 'No Skateboarding' seeks to highlight the history of one of society's most rebellious (and influential) subcultures.

'No Skateboarding' looks back at the history of skateboarding by displaying over 70 portraits shot over the last 15 years, showcasing some of the biggest legends in skate. Fenneteaux decided to deliberately evade the temptation to include action shots in 'No Skateboarding' and instead opted to feature posed portraits of the skaters with the street or skate area serving as their background. One of my favorite shots in 'No Skateboarding' features the legendary Tony Alva sitting on the edge of an empty pool with 'KEEP THIS PLACE SECRET' scrawled in graffiti beside him. It superbly captures the secretive, police-evading subculture that skateboarding was in its infancy.

'No Skateboarding' opens at the Colette Paris on June 6th and runs until August 3rd, 2011.
