This whimsical suspended work by the folks at Nendo is titled Growing Vases, and the story behind the Salone exhibit is quite fascinating. They were given “the abstract theme ‘cocoon’, and asked to create work that would directly convey the quixotic appeal of glass as something that is impractical and incomplete, but provides a breath of fresh air, opening up new possibilities,” according to Nendo.
Each of the delicate dangling white handblown glass shapes represents a vase, and the metal tubes the artists use to blow through have been cut and added to the vases to mimic flower blossoms, leaves and stems. When I first saw the work, before I knew the title, I thought that the Growing Vases actually looked like abstract pieces of fruit -- apples, pears and oranges falling from a night sky.
I’m not sure whether the piece includes any integrated light bulbs, but I think it would make an awesome light fixture in a contemporary home.
