A painting by Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang called Forever Lasting Love has been sold for the recordbreaking amount of $10.1 million by the Sotheby's auction house. (What recession?) The sale of the painting makes Xiaogang the world's richest living Chinese artist. The painting is in three panels and is a mixture of Buddhist and surrealist work that depicts life and death; the piece is considered avant-garde by art experts.
The auction was comprised of 105 contemporary and modern works owned by Belgian collector Guy Ullens. Ullens first started collecting major Chinese works in these two categories in the early 1980s. The total take from sales of Ullens' items was over $54 million on the day of the auction.
