Is it just me or is there something weirdly bizarre about these photographs?
This is Petrina Hick’s latest series of photographs, called “Beautiful Creatures”. Without a doubt, there is something weirdly beautiful about all of these images that you are looking at.
Hicks bombards her images with so much history and with associations but does not allow us to see a clear message throughout her photography.
She engages a playful yet confronting approach to satisfy our expectations. In one of her photographs, there is a cat that has been shaved, to resemble the Sphynx. Then you get the photograph of the young girl choking on what seems to be a budgie- that is half hanging out of her mouth. It is up to you to decide whether these are beautiful creatures.
Hicks is finishing her latest exhibition on the 9th April at the Stills Gallery in Paddington, Australia.
