Eccentric Chic

Teen Vogue Says "Grey Gardens" is Hot

The 1975 documentary, Grey Gardens, may once again influence fashion. The documentary goes inside the home of Jackie Kennedy's aunt, Edith Bouvier Beale, and her daughter, Little Edie. Their once stately manor on Long Island had fallen into disrepair; raccoons were eating away at the walls, they slept in beds covered in filth, and the vegetation outside had overtaken the entire house. The documentary was recently adapted into a Tony winning musical and will soon return to the big screen starring Drew Barrymore.

In the documentary, Little Edie seemed a little out of touch with reality. She would drape sweaters around her waist as a skirt, bath towels became makeshift turbans, and all her unconventional ensembles were always complemented with a brooch or high heels. In the September issue of Teen Vogue, Grey Gardens couture is featured in their A to Z Fall Fashion Guide. Suddenly, granny coats and cardigan head wraps are all the rage.
