Redesigning the Merry-Go-Round for the Twenty First Century

Manhattan's Battery Park is to get carousel inspired by its waterfront location as designed by the architects at Weisz + Yoes. This isn't the merry-go-round of your childhood memories; this is transparent changing sea fantasy of jumping dolphins, turtles and other sea creatures that use hi-tech media to simulate a deep sea dive.

Implications - While the initial goal may have been create something that would illuminate the park after dark, this project quickly turned into much, much more. What differentiates this from a traditional carousel is that the seats are made of "translucent fiberglass molded into dolphins, turtles, clownfish and other marine life." It will also be located in a turnable that has a 360-degree view and best of all, it will mimic what it is like to dive to the ocean floor. How cool is that?!
