Surgeons at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian in Oakland, PA, successfully performed the first “beating heart†transplant operation. The patient was 47 years old and suffered with congestive heart failure.
The hospital was using a new technology manufactured by TransMedics, Inc., an Andover-based company that developed the Organ Care System, which allowed surgery to be performed while the organ continued to be “perfused†with its own blood supply.
TransMedics is developing similar technology for lung, liver, and kidney transplants.
