London Goes Jenga

Great Ideas For Urban Design

Sometimes living in London, beside the fog and the rain, should be a great thing. And if you were one of the walkers on the Thames River these days, you would get one more reason to be proud.

Beside the usual newspapers and coffee, the walkers admired the latest urban creations from DSDHA architects.

The pavilions used special construction techniques: layered stacks of whitened calcified timber, with a green roof; another one is "the first charred timber-clad structure in the UK, created in a technique similar to the Japanese Yakisugi".

The project was exhibited in 2007, at the Royal Academy Summer Show and this spring it became a real urban environment project.
For me they look like a giant Jenga game :)

Urban Timber Stacking
The construction of urban pavilions using layered, whitened calcified timber with a green roof presents an opportunity for the timber industry to promote sustainable, eco-friendly materials and for architects to explore innovative design methods.
Charred Timber Cladding
The use of charred timber-cladding, a technique similar to Yakisugi, presents an opportunity for the timber industry to expand its market and for architects to explore new techniques for sustainable and visually stunning urban designs.
Green Urban Spaces
The creation of urban environment projects that integrate green spaces with architecture presents an opportunity for landscapers, urban planners, and architects to collaborate and create more sustainable and livable cities.
