Tricky Traffic Control

Smart Decano Speed Bump Responds to Vehicle Speed

Decano Industries is developing a ‘smart’ speed bump that will increase safety and decrease fuel consumption in Mexican cities. It works by responding to impacts from moving vehicles. It falls flat for speed-limit-abiding travelers, but maintains its bumpy shape if a vehicle is going too fast.

Similar designs are underway in other countries, but Decano’s speed bump doesn’t need electricity and only costs $1,500 per lane on top of having a ten year lifespan with an estimated total maintenance cost of about $500. All of these factors makes it a cost-effective practical solution for a developing country like Mexico.
