Es Devlin’s Library of Us Turns a Beach into a Shared Ritual of Reading

Library of Us is a moving public installation by Es Devlin that transforms reading into a collective experience along Miami Beach. The project consists of a series of mobile library structures that travel across the shoreline, inviting visitors to step inside, browse curated books, and read together in a temporary setting. Each unit is designed as a sculptural pavilion that shelters readers while remaining open to the surrounding beach, sea, and sky. The installation reframes reading as a social act situated within public space rather than a private, stationary activity.

The mobile libraries are constructed from lightweight materials that allow them to be repositioned throughout the day, creating shifting points of gathering along the coast. Interior elements support sitting, leaning, and shared use, while book selections are curated to reflect collective themes and local context.
