AI Expense Agents

American Express Acquires Hyper AI Expense Platform

American Express acquired Hyper, an AI-powered expense startup backed by Sam Altman, bringing Hyper’s autonomous expense agents into AmEx’s commercial services platform.

The deal, announced for closing in Q2 2026, aimed to fold Hyper’s natural-language expense processing and receipt-capture automation into AmEx merchant and corporate workflows. Hyper’s technology used machine learning to read receipts, categorize spend and generate expense reports with minimal human input. AmEx said the integration would bolster its corporate card and expense-management offerings, pairing its payments scale with Hyper’s automation.

For businesses, the acquisition promises faster reconciliation, lower admin overhead and more accurate reporting, reflecting a broader trend of fintech firms embedding AI assistants into back-office finance functions.
