Peter Beste Captures Norwegian Black Metal Culture

Photographer Peter Beste has documented the culture around Norwegian Black Metal, a violent subculture which emerged in the early 1990’s that is based in Satanism and extreme heavy metal. Some members of this extreme underground sect have been known to burn down medieval wooden churches or commit evil acts like murder.

The resulting images were published in his book ‘True Norwegian Black Metal’ along with a collection of essays on the subjects. The results are scarily fascinating and include scenes such as members being doused in warm cow’s blood prior to stage performances.
