Data Moshing Music Videos

Kanye West and Chairlift Both Use Trippy Editing Technique

Hip-hop impresario Kanye West was forced to release his music video for “Welcome to Heartbreak” early after he saw the music video for “Evident Utensil” by Chairlift, which uses the same data moshing technique.

On his blog, Kanye West explained the premature release of “Welcome to Heartbreak”: “This is not the next single, ‘Amazing’ is the next single. This is the video we’ve been working on for the last month. We know there is another video out there using the same technique, so we were forced to drop it now.”

We’ve included both Kanye West’s “Welcome to Heartbreak” and Chairlift’s “Evident Utensil” in this post so you can compare and contrast for yourself. Data moshing is also known as the Compression Hack Fade or Compression Hacking, and involves an array of colors, textures and pixels bleeding into one another. It’s an incredibly trippy effect that is best experienced either in HD or on LSD.
