Beijing National Aquatics Center

Water Cube

The count down to the 2008 Summer Olympics is getting tighter as the Beijing games approach. In an effort to prepare the city for its international tourism explosion, Beijing has been erected some phenomenal structures including the new Water Cube.

The National Aquatics Center, as it's also known, is the architectural structure which will serve as the main venue for swimming events during the Olympic games. The outside of the US$200 million building looks like a dense cloud of bubbles and glows in different shades of blue, from tropical turquoise to an elegant cobalt blue. Inside, there is eating for up to 17,000 people, 11,000 of which are temporary.

It was unveiled on Monday after four years of construction. The first event to take place inside will be the "Good Luck Beijing Swimming China Open” which runs from January 31 to February 5.
