Korean Researchers Unveiled Its Paediatric Emergency AI App

A team of South Korean researchers developed a pediatric emergency AI app to help hospital staff identify children who may require emergency care. The decision-support tool is powered by a natural language processing model that analyzes free-text clinical notes recorded before laboratory or diagnostic test results are available, supporting more informed triage decisions.

The model was trained using electronic medical record data from approximately 87,759 pediatric emergency department visits and is based on the Korean Medical-BERT language model. Researchers reported that it outperformed the Korean Triage and Acuity Scale in predicting which patients required emergency treatment. The team is now developing the technology into a smartphone application while pursuing multi-centre validation studies and additional post-pandemic testing.

For healthcare providers, the app could improve triage accuracy, support faster clinical decision-making and help allocate emergency resources more efficiently. The project reflects the growing adoption of AI-assisted decision support to address emergency department overcrowding and pediatric care shortages.
