Lucy Hutchings is sending a message to the jewelry world with her 2009 collection: Go big or go home. The British designer is paying tribute to the Bowerbird, who loves to feather his nest with lots of blue to attract an egglayer. Hutchings decided that she would make the rocks in her jewelry egg-sized and blue. Can’t hurt, right? If you want a nest in your head? Gotta work.
Natural and man-made elements coexist side by side in the collection of collars, pendants, bracelets and earrings. Beads meticulously enveloped in iridescent blue feathers give each piece their characteristic splash of color, on top of the glossy glass beads and glittering Swarovski crystals encased in cages of gold. Linked by woven fibers as well as metallic chains, Hutchings’ new collection is truly a juxtaposition of the natural against the industrial.
