Solar Powered Cemeteries

Participating in initiatives to stop global warming is not just for the living. Now you can continue to help long after you take your last breath as has been proven by a cemetery in Santa Coloma de Gramanet, near Barcelona, Spain. It recently installed a solar power plant on top of its mausoleums.

The $1,000,000 eco investment will keep about 62 tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere every year, and will generate enough power for 60 homes.

The problem faced by the city was that Santa Coloma de Gramanet only has a few open sunny places, and the cemetery was one of the only spaces available. The project was initially met with a negative response, but public opinion changed once people saw that the installation is a positive and fitting tribute to the dead, who would be proud to improve the environment for future generations.
