Sun-Powered Soldiers

The Solar Soldier System is Designed to Cut Down on Battlefield Batteries

The amount of gear that soldiers have to carry into the field could become a lot less heavy thanks to researchers at the University of Glasgow and their Solar Soldier System. The Solar Soldier System is the name of a proposal to eliminate the bulky batteries that soldiers carry into the field and replace them with photovoltaic panels for day use and thermoelectric devices for night use.

The photovoltaic panels would absorb sunlight during the day while the thermoelectric devices would convert the temperature difference between a soldier's body and the outside air into energy. Researchers are hoping to eliminate as much as 50 percent of the weight from the 99- to 154-pound loads that soldiers currently carry into combat.
