Remixed Renaissance Sculptures

Roger Reutimann Re-Interprets 'The Birth of Venus' Painting

If you’re thinking to yourself that this stunning Roger Reutimann sculpture looks familiar, that’s because it’s based the famous ‘The Birth of Venus’ painting by Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. Only Reutimann has given his interpretation of Botticelli’s work a contemporary twist by replacing Venus’ head with a skeletal skull and coloring the body of goddess in a highly saturated red.

As Roger Reutimann explains, the changes he made to the piece are significant in meaning. Titled ‘Death of Venus,’ Reutimann’s statue comments on how modern art is thought of as a commodity to be sold later at a higher cost, which greatly contrasts people’s attitudes towards art centuries ago. The skull is thus a symbol of cultural shifts and the Ferrari red color represents the glamour and fast-living culture of modern society.
