Optical Camouflage Technology Reflects Hidden Spots While Driving

The optical camouflage technology utilized by Keio University effectively eliminates the blind spot while reversing the car.

Yuji Uema from the Graduate School of Media Design at Keio University explains that the optical camouflage design uses external cameras and a half mirror to reflect the exterior obstacles on the road. The obstacles are projected onto the mirror after being processed through a computer. The images appear as if they were the actual size, making the driver feel as if the objects are actually as close as they seem. This technology is perfect for extra assistance in countries like Hong Kong where parking spots and driving lanes are extremely tight.

Although the design currently is only equipped for the rear view, the project’s aim is to make it so that the entire 360 degrees surrounding the vehicle becomes transparent to the driver.
