The Sanden hand cranked vending machine lets Japanese citizens enjoy beverages or snacks during blackouts and grid failures. Although many vending machines across Japan are programmed to dispense free drinks during emergencies, they are rendered motionless without electricity. Thus, this machine can operate during chaotic disasters such as tsunamis or earthquakes.
With a little elbow grease and a series of 70 cranks, the machine is able to dispense up to seven bottles with each charge. Perhaps with all the effort going into vigorously turning the handle, the machine should merit the initial cranker an extra drink or two. The device not only provides a solution for disastrous circumstances, but brings possibilities of how kinetic energy could soon power all vending machines.
