The Georgi Tushev ‘Ace of Spades’ exhibit explores the beauty and splendor of magnetized attraction through the use of high-powered magnets. Tushev’s current photographs are a combination of paintings and pieces of 3D sculptural artwork.
The magnetic landscapes he crafts resemble nebulous cells like ones one might see under a microscope or out in space. Some degree of the work’s final result is under Tushev’s control, but it is mostly the way the paint decides to reacts to the magnets that determine the finished piece. The oil paint’s reaction to the high-powered magnetic fields leaves bizarre and surreal visualizations on Tushev canvases. In some of his pieces, Tushev uses pigments with high iron concentrations, that when exposed to magnets, create 3D textures and surfaces on the canvas. This literally allows Georgi Tushev’s work to jump off the canvas and exceed its normally restrictive boundaries.
These installments have an extra-terrestrial and whole otherworldly feel to them, drawing the curious and intrigued viewer in. The ‘Ace of Spades’ collection resembles futuristic depictions of space and biology that entice the viewer.
