This Antonio Gibotta Photography Captures Energy

In these photographs, Italian photographer Antonio Gibotta captures a swirling vibrant energy that feels as though it is going to push its way out of the frame. The photographs depict people celebrating the Hindu festival of Holi. Hinduism is a complex religion and this is reflected in the clothing and body paint the people in the photographs wear. Bright reds, yellows and blues that to Western sensibilities may be thought of as clashing colors, blend together harmoniously like separate notes in a chord.

From afar, many of the photographs could pass for an abstract expressionist oil painting since the human figures are lost in a whirlpool of color and motion. To capture this sense of energy using a medium that is designed to freeze motion rather than emphasize it is quite a feat and Gibotta deserves credit for pulling it off.
