Giant Model Rockets

Saturn V is the Largest Amateur-Built Rocket Ever Launched

I used to love launching model rockets as a kid. This takes it to a whole new level.

At 11 meters high, this rocket made by amateur Steve Eves is a thing of beauty--and coolness. It took approximately 1,500 hours and $25,000 to build this replica of the Saturn V rocket that took US astronauts to the moon.

On April 25th, this model successfully reached a height of 1,300 meters before parachutes were deployed using a modified automotive seatbelt locking mechanism.

While not reaching orbit, this feat shows that reaching orbit may not be an impossibility for future amateur rocket builders.
