The Plamp Blends an Indoor Plant With Eco-Friendly Lighting

Dutch designer Twan Verdonck has designed a growing light fixture called the ‘Plamp.’ The ‘Plamp’ is essentially a plant that grows around an energy-saving lamp. One can grow it or trim it to dim or brighten the light accordingly.

‘Plamp’ was a work in progress. Twan Verdonck posted several mock-ups on his blog, Dreaming Green, and solicited blogger feedback. After receiving 65 pieces of constructive feedback, Verdonck was able to finalize his design. To thank those visitors for their help, Verdonck made the ‘Plamp’ available as a free downloadable DIY manual.

Says Verdonck of his design, “It’s so cool to grow your own lamp! I own some great Kartell and Ikea lamps, but I’ve never had such a bond with these products as with my self-made Plamps. Every day I check my Plamps to see if they are doing alright and to see if they are thirsty. My Lemon Plamp recently “gave” me two delicious lemons. Which other design lamp offers you that?”

Verdonck believes that in the near future, design objects will grow instead of behaving as static objects. His experiments, such as a growing curtain, are shown on his website below.
