Guerrilla Sacred Sites

Lithuania's Hill of Crosses

The Hill of Crosses in Siauliai, Lithuania, is strangely beautiful. And no one knows how it got there.

They are 100,000 crosses, on a small mountain, creating an amazing view. It is also a great illustration of the concept of power to the people.

The Soviets have apparently taken it down time again and again, only to have the crosses reappear.

Implications - Guerrilla art is a way for the masses to anonymously express political views, beautify their surroundings and rebel against popular culture. In some parts of the world, freedom of expression is a precious yet illegal idea; guerrilla art installations such as this one lets citizens express sacred beliefs without fear of reprisal or persecution.
